Railway cutting on the Edinburgh to Glasgow line, Croy, Dunbartonshire
|
The Edinburgh & Glasgow line was authorised in July 1838 and opened in February 1842. It was highly engineered and included viaducts, tunnels as well as high embankments and deep cuttings. This deep cutting is through solid rock.
The creation of the line was a highly labour-intensive process, involving huge squads of navvies (labourers). It was not without its troubles – two navvies were hanged beside this line for killing an unpopular 'ganger' (sub-contractor and foreman). |
