Simple arched 'pack-horse' bridge, Balloch, Alyth, Perthshire
|
Narrow,
arched bridges of this type are often refered to as 'pack-horse' bridges,
though the attribution cannot always be authenticated.
These simple bridges incorporated an arch with built-up approaches (spandrels) for access and additional strength. Bridges of this design were still being built in the early 19th century.
Unlike their predecessors, 19th century versions have joints between the stones forming the arch at right angles to its curve – as here. Typically these bridges are only 2-2.5m wide. They were funded by one or more landowner. |
