Three-arched bridge across the River Annan, Brydekirk, Dumfries-shire
|
Bridges of this type, with multiple arches set on piers, have a long history in Scotland. Surviving examples date back to the 15th century.
Typically, their piers have 'cutwaters'. These projecting bases deflect the flow of the current away from the masonry of the bridge. They can be extended up to the top of the bridge parapet, to form 'refuges' for pedestrians crossing amongst vehicular traffic.
This is a comparatively late example, built c. 1810 'at a very considerable expense to the public'. It stands on a minor road, created to link the planned village of Brydekirk (established c. 1803) to places further east. |
