The western terminus of the Highland Railway's east – west line from Dingwall, opened in 1897.

From here ferries set out on the short crossing to Kyleakin, Skye. The station building and the adjacent tracks were built on the ferry pier.

The ramp on the left provides road access. The line had been completed from Dingwall to Strome Ferry in 1870.
