River ferry, Caputh to Murthly, Perthshire |
River ferries were at one time common – hence 'Boat of...' as in Boat of Garten – but gradually gave way to bridges. This late-19th century survival is on a wide river at a point where traffic volumes did not justify a bridge.
The ferry platform is mounted on two hulls and is hauled across the river on a chain. Ramps on either bank are provided to link the boat deck to the roadway. The ferryman's house is on the far right of the picture. |
