main image Canal basin, Ratho, Midlothian
The Union Canal was built between 1818-1822 to link Edinburgh to the Forth and Clyde Canal.

Canal basins were inland ports. Besides a widened waterway and a quay for mooring barges, there might be goods yards and warehousing.

Here heaps of coal are piled on the quay – perhaps the cargo of the barge. The large building next to the canal bridge is the Brig Inn.
