Avon aqueduct, Stirlingshire and West Lothian |
The Avon aqueduct carries the Union Canal over the valley of the River Avon, on the border of Stirlingshire and West Lothian.
The aqueduct – second only in scale to Telford's Pont-y-Cysyllte – has 12 arches, is around 274.3m in length and up to 25.9m in height.
The Union Canal linked Edinburgh to the Forth and Clyde Canal and hence to Glasgow. Within 25 years of its completion it was superceded by a railway linking the two cities. |
