main image Canal locks on the Caledonian Canal, Fort Augustus, Inverness-shire
The Caledonian Canal opened in 1822. It has 29 locks and can take vessels of up to 48.4m in length, 11.0m breadth and 4.1m draught.

Locks enable boats to travel from higher to lower levels and vice versa by enclosing the vessel in a water-tight section, within which the water level is adjusted to the required lower or higher mark.

Two canals cross Scotland from east to west – the Caledonian and the Forth and Clyde. Other canals covered shorter distances. Some are now barely traceable.
