main image Railway junction, signals and station, Fountainhall, Midlothian
Besides the complex mesh of railway tracks at this railway junction, the essential features are the signal box, with the raised, multi-windowed signalling room.

The line from Edinburgh to Hawick was authorised in 1845 and opened in 1849. By 1862 it had been completed through to Carlisle. It closed in January 1969, leaving the Borders without a single railway station. This photograph dates from c. 1920.

The line joining the Edinburgh – Carlisle (Waverley) line is The Lauder Light Railway, one of a number of lines built under Light Railway Orders. The LLR was incorporated in 1898 and opened in July 1901. It closed to passengers in September 1932, and to goods in October 1958.
