main image Bonar bridge, on Telford's road from Inverness to Thurso and Wick
The early 19th century saw a wave of road and bridge building in the Highlands. Two Commissions were set up in 1803 to build, respectively, a canal from Inverness to Fort William (the Caledonian Canal) and new roads and bridges. Thomas Telford became the consulting engineer.

This elegant cast iron bridge was cast in Shropshire, transported in sections and assembled here at Bonar in 1811-12. It was part of the route from Inverness to Thurso and Wick, as part of the Commission for Highland Roads and Bridges. It was destroyed by floods in 1892.
