Union chain bridge, River Tweed, England and Scotland
|
The Union chain bridge is an early surviving example of a suspension bridge. It was designed by Captain Samuel Brown, in consultation with the Scottish engineer John Rennie and was completed in 1820.
For five years the Union bridge had the longest span of any vehicle-carrying wrought iron suspension bridge in the world, some 133.2m. The bridge was also cheap to build – £7,700 compared with around £20,000 for a masonry bridge.
The bridge used bars in place of the usual cables. The foundation stone was laid on 2nd August 1819 and it opened on 26th July 1820. |
