main image General Wade's military road, Glen Croe, Cowal, Argyll
The Jacobite rebellions of 1715 and 1745 prompted extensive road-building works, mostly in the Highlands, to facilitate troop movements.

Two generals, Wade and Caulfield, were actively involved in these works between 1724 and 1767. The remains of the roads which they built can still be seen today.

This section, near the head of Glen Croe, is part of the route from Dumbarton to Inveraray, as it approaches a coll known as the 'Rest and be Thankful'. The modern road runs further up the valley side.
