Track (peat road), Lamb Hoga, Fetlar, Shetland |
This track linked peat deposits in the Lamb Hoga peninsula to inhabited parts of the island.
Pack ponies are transporting peats down from the peat banks. The mesh paniers are 'maishies' and the woven baskets 'kishies'.
Wheeled transport is a relative newcommer to much of Scotland. Previously the backs of beasts or wheel-less 'slypes' were the best means available. Routes to former commons – where peats were cut – may be marked by the use of the term 'loan' or "loaning" for sections of road or track.
