M90, near Dron, Perthshire
|
The arrival of motorways, in the decades after 1960, saw the biggest road-building programme since the turnpikes of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
The first 7km section of the M8, across the Lanarkshire/West Lothian border, had opened by 1965.
By 1998 Scotland had 344km of motorway, in a near complete network linking Edinburgh and Glasgow to Perth, Stirling, Greenock, Ayrshire and the English Border near Carlisle. |
