The earliest toll roads in Scotland, for Midlothian, were authorised in 1713. This is an early-19th century Grecian Doric tollhouse, on the Perth to Dundee turnpike. The panel on the right gives a table of tolls. Between 1750 and 1844, nearly 350 Acts of Parliament were passed for tolls on Scottish roads.
