main image Slate quarry, Ballachulish, Argyll
Slate was formed over millions of years from very fine mud, heated and compressed to form very thin beds of rock.

Slate was first worked at Ballachulish in 1693 and ceased in 1955. Other major quarries included Aberfoyle and Birnam, both in Perthshire, and Easdale, on the island of that name in Argyll.

Stacks of cut slates stand on the quarry floor. Centuries of working have left mountains of waste on which very little grows and deep, flooded hollows.
