main image Sandstone quarry, near Melrose, Roxburghshire
Sedimentary rocks, such as sandstone and limestone, were deposited in layers which could be quarried by cleaving them away from the bedrock.

Here, men are at work, quarrying, dressing and transporting blocks of stone at a quarry, near Melrose. One man is working at the quarry face.

Quarried blocks of stone, with chains attached to help move them, lie to the left of the picture. Rocks of this type are widespread in the south and east of Scotland, less so in the north west.
