Harvested bent grass, Ardheiskeir, North Uist, Inverness-shire |
The 'dais' (heap) of harvested 'bent' grass is roped and weighted to prevent it from blowing away in the strong winds.
'Bent' as used here does not mean bent grass in the strict botanical sense (i.e. Agrostis spp.) but rather marram grass (Gaelic 'murain') which grows on sandy, coastal land (Gaelic 'machir').
Marram or bent is used in thatching ricks and buildings, one of which can be seen here in the left middle distance. |
