main image Igneous quarry, Greenland, Dunbartonshire
The hard-wearing qualities of igneous rocks, such as granite, has long made them a favoured material for prestigious buildings and monuments.

The toughness of the rock has also led to its use as a component in aggregates and in road-building.

Rubislaw, Aberdeen, was once the largest igneous quarry in Scotland. Now it is a huge, flooded hole, hundreds of feet deep. Many others, on a much smaller scale, can be found across Scotland.
