Public telephones were operated by the Post Office, hence the use of pillar-box red paint.
The robust cast-iron phone box was produced over several decades during the 20th century and still heavily outnumbers specimins of its successor design.
The telecommunications sector of the Post Office was privatised in September 1979, with the setting up of Brittish Telecommunications. In the now privatised market BT is no longer the sole provider of public phone services. |
