main image Harbour, Brora, Sutherland
The harbour at Brora, Sutherland, was part of the 'improvements' carried out by the Marquess of Stafford between 1811 and 1813.

The improvements involved linking an island (centre) to the south shore, building a quay and forming a basin. A tramway was built, linking the harbour to a coal mine and a salt works.

Scotland's indented coastline afforded many convenient anchorages but many more were created from an early date by harbour-building. An example is Dunbar's 'Lammerhaven', which dates from the 16th century.
