Livestock mart, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire |
In the late 19th century, public health concerns over street markets for livestock brought about the creation of purpose-built market sites, away from town centres.
By then, most burghs had rail access. Markets were often situated near rail yards, as here.
This fine polygonal auction building contains tiers of seating, with a central ring into which livestock for sale could be led or driven. |
