Often they might occupy one front apartment in a single-storey cottage, adapted for the purpose rather than built as such. Apart from sign boards – or signs painted onto walls – former shops might have window frames set closer to the outer wall-face, windows highlighted by painted margins or fewer glazing bars than domestic windows.
