Village shop, Edmonstone, Midlothian |
Prior to the late 20th century, rural shops occupied premises which were almost indistinguishable from houses. Often they might occupy one front apartment in a single-storey cottage, adapted for the purpose rather than built as such.
Apart from sign boards – or signs painted onto walls – former shops might have window frames set closer to the outer wall-face, windows highlighted by painted margins or fewer glazing bars than domestic windows. This photograph was taken in 1929. |
