In the late 20th century, garden centres became a significant growth area. They were sited in the countryside close to urban populations. Often, as here, they are situated on former smallholdings.

Increased leisure time, greater mobility and higher disposable incomes combined to heighten demand for garden centres. High urban land values and the need for extensive parking have made semi-rural locations attractive to this, and other areas of retailing.

Facilities at garden centres have diversified. This one has its own coffee shop, as a means of lengthening visits and making a trip to a garden centre an end in itself.
