main image Post office and telephone kiosk, Eigg, Small Isles, Inverness-shire
Post offices were once found within every parish in Scotland, including many islands.

The postal service dates back to the 16th century, becoming a national (i.e. British) service in 1711. In 1840, a uniform postal charge was introduced for all deliveries within Britain.

Besides their postal role, post offices became the communication centres for telegraph and telephone. They were the place where most people carried out their transactions with the State and often the only shop for miles around.

This one, as others, is cheaply built in corrugated sheet metal, but with a fanciful timber-framed gablet. The photograph was taken in 1963.
