Caravaning was a popular leisure pursuit in the early 20th century, but it did not become a mass activity until the 1950s. Car ownership was on the increase and those without their own transport still had access to static vans via public transport.

The impact of caravan parks on the landscape is all too evident here, though the open, sloping site makes this one exceptionally prominent.

In more recent times, greater care has been taken in siting and landscaping sites.
