This pier at Whiting Bay was completed in 1901. Horse-drawn vehicles await the arrival of tourists, the photograph dates from c. 1910. In the west, access via railways and steam ships brought the Clyde coast and islands within range of the Glasgow conurbation. In the east, many small seafaring burghs developed a 'seaside' aspect. Even the cities of Aberdeen, Dundee and Edinburgh had their seaside suburbs. Beyond these towns and cities, the attractions of the coast drew seasonal – or even day trip – visitors to smaller settlements: from St Abbs in the east to the villages of Arran in the west, all contributing to their development.
