main image Mineral well, Moffat Spa, Dumfries-shire
Moffat was Scotland's first recorded mineral spring, discovered in 1633. A second was located in the 1740s.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, 'Taking the Waters' at mineral wells became a significant event in the social calendar of the better off. Accommodation and other facilities for visitors had to be provided nearby.

The late 19th and early 20th centuries, saw the building of vast 'hydropathic' hotels at Moffat, Strathpeffer, Dunblane and some coastal sites.

Belief in the healing power of waters is evident in the 'holy' wells found in a number of locations – such as St Ronan's, Innerleithen. These, in turn may have been Christianised pagan sites.
