Police station, Dalswinton, Dumfries-shire |
The old concept of 'policing', from the 18th century and earlier, involved matters of both public order and public health. In rural areas, policing in the modern sense dates from the early 19th century.
By 1840, a dozen or so counties had established a police force. Under an Act of 1892 provision was rationalised, although burghs with existing forces and a population of over 700 were allowed to retain them.
During the late 20th century, pressures on manpower and resources combined with improved communications, saw the closure of most rural police stations, though their former premises, including cells, can still be found. |
