Library, Balmaclellan, Kirkcudbrightshire |
This building housed a public library set up by a local landowner, William Barbour of Barlay, in 1878.
Although many landowners were involved in local philanthropic projects, the provision of a library is an unusual gesture. A panel over the doorway carries the Barbour family crest.
The building and its external finish are characteristic of the region, with stone rubble walls, slate roof and contrasting paintwork. Balmaclellan was the home of Robert Paterson, the stonemason, on whom Sir Walter Scott based the character of 'Old Mortality'. |
