main image Strathmiglo primary school, Fife
The Education Act (Scotland) of 1872 brought schooling under state control and local authority operation. This replaced a mixed provision which had included schools financed and run at parish level.

This photograph of Strathmiglo primary school, Fife, was taken around 1880. The two doorways may be separate entrances for boys and girls. The school master's or mistress's house is situated behind the school, towards the left of the picture.

In 1893, the parish of Strathmiglo had a second public school, at Gateside. In that year, Strathmiglo school had accommodation for 354 children, with an average attendance of 180.
