Balfour Castle, Shapinsay, Orkney |
A romanticised view of the past was a powerful force in 19th century Europe. In Scotland it was expressed in the novels of Sir Walter Scott and in an architectural style which came to be known as Scots Baronial.
Scott's own house – re-named Abbotsford – was an early example. Turrets, towers and crow-stepped gables were some of the architectural details applied, as here, to otherwise contemporary houses.
The building of Balfour Castle began in 1847 – to a design of David Bryce – one of the principal proponents of the style. It is now an empty shell. |
