main image Abercairney Abbey, Perthshire
From the early 19th century, tastes in country house design began to turn away from Classical prototypes in favour of ones derived from 'Gothick' or 'Tudor-bethan' originals.

Abercairney Abbey was built between 1804 and 1842, in a style derived from English Tudor originals. In 1869 – as if to make it more Scottish – a sort of Renaissance tower house was added to the right of the main block. This photograph dates from the 1850s or '60s.

In 1960 the entire edefice was demolished. This was a fate shared by many country houses, too expensive to maintain in a changed world.
