Colonsay House, Colonsay, Argyll |
As the need for defence receded, land-owners houses changed from castles and tower houses to symmetrical, low-rise designs, inspired by Roman and Greek originals.
This change was first evident in the 16th and 17th centuries – in the houses of royalty and the aristocracy. During the 18th and 19th centuries, it was applied to the homes of lesser landowners and to urban villas.
Colonsay House dates from the 1720s, with later modifications. Its symmetrical central block, with flanking wings, is typical of its age and status, as is the parkland setting. |
