Hydro dam, Kinloch Rannoch, Perthshire |
The idea of using water power to make electricity is attractive in the Scottish Highlands where there is a high level of rainfall.
The first hydro plant was built at Foyers beside Loch Ness, in 1895, to power an aluminium smelter. A much larger one came into operation at Kinlochleven, in 1904, for the same purpose.
Further hydro plants were built in the years before 1940, but the creation of the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board, in 1943, led in the next 15 years to much larger schemes. Some, like the Tummel scheme of which the dam at Kinloch Rannoch is part, involved several dams and many miles of underground piping, representing an enormous investment by the Government. |
