Mill dam, Milton of Applecross, Ross and Cromarty |
Before
19th century improvements in transport, all corn had to be ground
locally. The corn mill was therefore essential to the life of the
community.
Each mill had to have a sufficient supply of water to drive it. In some places this required the construction of dams to create a mill pond (or mill dam). This, along with the channels needed to direct the water from the dam to the mill, might be a significant piece of work. |
