Snow fence, Soutra Hill, Midlothian |
Drifting snow can cause severe disruption to transport, especially in upland areas. Soutra Hill has been an important route between the Lothians and the Borders since at least Roman times, but also an exposed and elevated one.
The fence, constructed of palings wired into a strip, holds back the snow, making it gather on its upwind side rather than on the highway (A68). In the Highlands some railways have snow tunnels to protect them in the most vulnerable locations.
The prevailing wind direction, its strength and the weight of intercepted snow can be guessed from the oblique fence supports to the right of the fence itself. |
