Sea embankment, Musselburgh, Midlothian |
Sea embankments were built to protect vulnerable coasts from erosion or, as here, to reclaim coastal mud flats.
The Musselburgh 'lagoons' were established as a means of storing and disposing of coal ash from the nearby Cockenzie power station. The flat, reclaimed land can eventually be developed.
In the upper Firth of Forth, and elsewhere, there were earlier reclamations. A large area in west Fife, for example, was reclaimed for agricultural use in the early 19th century. |
