Water supply reservoir, Glencorse, Midlothian |
The growth of towns and cities meant that by the late 17th century local supplies of water were running out in some instances.
Edinburgh, which is not on a river, was the first to solve its water problems by piping from a distant spring.
By the 19th century, cities were building reservoirs to catch and hold water. Edinburgh constructed several small ones in the Pentland Hills. These reservoirs enhanced the landscape and because they were public property they, and the land round them, were accessible to city people for recreations such as fishing and walking. |
