main image Opencast mining, Burnside, Cumnock, Ayrshire
With the demise of deep mining, shallow seams of coal are being extensively exploited through opencast methods.

The method involves removing and setting aside overburden (soil, other strata) and quarrying seams of coal. Once completed, the overburden is replaced.

Opencast, whist cheap and relatively safe compared to deep mining, has a high cost in terms of historical landscape, in that every feature of the quarried area is erased.
