Emily Pit, Arniston, Midlothian |
From
Medieval times onwards, coal was extensively mined across central
Scotland. Workings later stretched from as far north as Brora, Sutherland
and as far south as Sanquhar, Dumfries-shire.
The Emily Pit coal mine operated from the 1850s. The Arniston Colliery,
of which it was part, was the first in Scotland to use electricity
for pumping. The polychrome brick building (centre, right) housed
the electricity generating plant with a 300hp Robey engine, installed
in 1899.
The mine closed in the 1960s and the buildings were demolished. |
