main image Whaling station, Bunavoneadar, Harris, Inverness-shire
This whaling station was established in 1904, by Karl Herlofsen, for processing whale carcasses. It was later taken on by Lord Leverhulme as part of his plans to develop the island's economy.

In the 1950s, the whaling station buildings and plant were upgraded. Norwegians and Harris folk were employed from May until September each year.

Over 50 local men and women worked at cutting up the carcasses and in operating the boilers and separators. Women cleaned and packed the meat for dispatch to Glasgow.
