Icehouse, Tugnet, Moray |
This icehouse is part of the salmon fishing station at Tugnet, near the mouth of the River Spey, Moray.
This was the largest and most impressive salmon-fishing station in Scotland. It was established in 1783 and also included boiling houses and a bothy.
Icehouses are found on country estates and around the coast. Those inland were for domestic use but the coastal ones, such as this, used ice to preserve fish destined for distant markets. |
