Limestone quarry, Oxwellmains, Dunbar, East Lothian |
Limestone has been quarried and occasionally mined since at least the 16th century. Burnt lime was used as a mortar in building and as an agricultural fertiliser to reduce soil acidity.
These workings have supplied the adjacent cement works since its opening in 1962, and are the largest in Scotland.
Exhausted workings are back-filled and the top-soil replaced. |
