Pylons and electricity sub-station, Auchengree, Ayrshire |
The creation of the National Grid, for electricity distribution, started out as a public/private sector partnership in 1927.
Between 1927 and 1931, the Central Scottish Grid was established, extending from Carlisle to Aberdeen. In 1943, an act was passed which created the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board. In 1948, other public suppliers were nationalised.
The process of extending electric power supplies to all is now very nearly complete, but its impact on the landscape has not been a matter for universal rejoicing. |
