Scotland is one of the windiest countries in Europe, but it has been slow to exploit its potential for generating electricity. This is partly because of its richness in fossil fuels and good hydro-electric sites.

Interest in, and development of wind power came only in the late 20th century, with small-scale experimental sites in a number of locations. This group of wind-powered turbines make up Scotland's first wind farm, dating from 1994, on an exposed hill-top site in Lanarkshire.

Whether the wider potential of wind power will be exploited depends on a number of factors: the political will, technical outcomes, and aesthetic considerations in siting visually obtrusive towers in cherished landscapes.
