Nuclear power station, Torness, East Lothian |
Although Scotland had extensive coal, oil, gas and hydro-electric resources, the needs of the military ensured that nuclear power would also have a role.
The sites chosen for nuclear reactors are generally coastal, reflecting the need for large volumes of cooling water and the ability to disperse any accidental discharges. Torness power station employs 600 workers.
The building housing its two reactors looms over the lowland landscape of East Lothian. The lead up to its construction, started in 1980, saw long-term on-site protests by anti-nuclear campaigners. |
