main image Motor garage, Stow, Midlothian
In the early 20th century, the internal combustion engine came into widespread use in vehicles. Fairgreaves' were a firm of millwrights who took this oportunity to diversify into motor vehicle maintainence.

At this early stage there was no existing architectural idiom for garages. The building was an existing, pre-fabricated, corrugated sheet metal structure.

The assemblage of two, three and four wheeled vehicles is clearly for the benefit of the camera, and a matter of pride to the owners.
