main image Estate gasworks, Culzean, Ayrshire
From the early 1800s, gas – derived from coal – was used for indoor and outdoor lighting in towns and factories. Before long it was also being used in country houses, provided that money was available to fund a private gas works and coal for gas-making could be had locally.

Gasworks were being built on rural estates by the 1820s. Sir Walter Scott's home at Abbotsford, Selkirkshire, had gas retorts (for extracting gas from coal) fitted in 1825.

This photograph shows the estate gasworks at Culzean, Ayrshire. Culzean Castle and its grounds are now a National Trust for Scotland property.
