Fence post with wire tensioners, Glenesk, Angus |
A strand of barbed wire has been fastened around the post. This 'mischievous invention of the ingenious American' came to Britain in the late 19th century. It offered an effective and cheap means of enclosing but could injure people and livestock.
The winders' rack and pinion mechanism allows the wires to be tightened without their slipping back between turns.
The heavy lichen growth suggests that the air here, on the edge of the Grampian Mountains, is clean. |
